Games that have a unique story are the ones that speak to gamers like me, the most. Sometimes, you can’t find amazing storytelling in movies and TV shows that you can find in a well-written game. Some games leave a mark because of how brilliant they are. I’ll mention some of these games in this post.
We live in the age of the internet, where we can easily access games by downloading them, rather than having to go all the way to the game store to buy a disc. Kingdom Hearts II
Out of the entire Kingdom Hearts series, Kingdom Hearts II has always been my favorite. In fact, it was the first game that I played in the series, and though it made no sense at all, it made me fall in love with it.
The story revolves around a young boy named Sora who is looking for his missing friends Riku (who disappeared into the darkness at the end of the first part) and Kairi (who was left behind on their Island when it was taken over by darkness). Throughout the game, Sora is accompanied by Goofy (who specializes in strength-based attacks since he is a knight) and Donald (whose specialty is magic-based attacks since he is a mage). Sora comes across a new league of villains who call themselves the Organization 13, based on thirteen villains.
What I love most about the game is the fluid mechanics, all the Disney-based worlds, and the super-captivating storyline. It is the kind of game that you just can’t miss. Playing it will pull you into playing all the other Kingdom Hearts games to understand the story better.

Horizon: Zero Dawn
This game has a concept like no other. It is set far into the future, where the world is taken over by rogue AI and beastlike machines that attack humans on sight. However, the most intriguing part is that even though the game is set in the future, people live like prehistoric tribes, and instead of using guns as weapons, people use bows and arrows, spears, and so on.
The game is centered around Aloy, a young woman who seeks to find out more about her lineage and about the “Old Ones” (our society right now, basically) that worked on robotics and AI, and what exactly happened to them. Aloy also seeks out the AI that is supposed to help her restore the Earth to the point where it can support life again after it was engulfed by the “Faro Plague”. You’ll have to play the game to find out more and develop a better understanding of the game.
Once you are done with Zero Dawn, you should also make sure that you play the sequel, Horizon: Forbidden West, as it delves deeper into the story and allows you to set the other forms of AI free again so that you can restore Earth.

Ghost of Tsushima
If you’ve ever taken an interest in the history of Japan, then this game is for you.
It is set during the time Japan was invaded by Mongol leaders, as you take on the role of Jin Sakai, a proud Samurai warrior fighting his way to liberate the people of Japan from the Mongols. The Mongols also take his uncle captive, so Jin aims to free his uncle and save Japan.
Ghost of Tsushima is definitely among the best games I’ve ever played. Every time I play, I feel like a Samurai throughout the game, as the game incorporates different samurai stances for different types of enemies, including archers, swordsmen, and brutes. As the story progresses, Jin has to give up some of his practices as a Samurai to help liberate the people of Japan.

God of War: Ragnarok
There was a time when I thought Kratos would only stay restricted to Greek mythology, but you can’t imagine my excitement when the 2018 reboot was announced and Kratos finally made his way into Norse mythology. However, out of the two God of War games, it was Ragnarok (the sequel) that I liked more.
The game is a lot more action-packed, and it is amazing from a story perspective as it followed Kratos’ and Atreus’ prophecy and fate. Plus, there is a plot twist in the game that absolutely blew my mind, but I won’t spoil it for you.
If I had to get started with any of the games mentioned above, I’d start with Kingdom Hearts II, of course. It looks like a kid’s game, but I promise you the story is a lot more than that.
