We’ve all had those days.
When you just don’t want to get out of bed.
When you wish for a big miracle that stops you from leaving your room.
When all you want to do is stay in bed and let the day pass you by.
But, unfortunately, for many of us, that is not always an option. The downside of adulting, right?
So, we’re not here to tell you that you need to just man up and go on with your day. That’s just stupid.
We’re here to show you some ways you might feel better when staying at home is just not an option.
STEP 1: Take 5 Deep Breaths
You’ve probably heard this the most when going through something like this. So we won’t bore you with how to do it.
We’ll just tell you why it works.
Taking deep, slow breaths can activate the body’s calming response, which can help slow the heart rate, reduce physical tension, and lower feelings of stress. Focusing on your breath can also interrupt those unhelpful thoughts and make difficult emotions feel more manageable. While it won’t solve the underlying cause of feeling low, it can help you feel calmer and think more clearly.
STEP 2: Make An Easy To-do List
You can do it on your phone’s notes app or, our favourite, write it down on a piece of paper. Don’t make it a 10-point-long list with unachievable goals.
Just write down 3 small things you want to achieve today. The ones that’ll make it easier to get out of bed.
It can be something as simple as going to the gym or something as yummy as eating a pizza for lunch.
Having goals you look forward to, and getting the chance to tick them off once they’re achieved, can send your brain some happy signals that you’re probably seeking as well.
However, always remember that while these goals are meant to help you have a better, more focused day, not being able to achieve them should not send you into a spiral.
The key point here is to keep things light and manageable.
STEP 3: Take A Nice, Long Shower
You’d be surprised at how much better you can feel once you step out of the shower.
The act of cleansing your body also offers the mental image of you cleansing that funk out of your brain.
If you don’t mind the add-on step, then opt for a fragrant soap or body wash that comes with calming ingredients like Lavender or Cedarwood, or uplifting ingredients like Mandarin or Menthol.
STEP 4: Put On A Nice Perfume
A good fragrance can genuinely make or break your mood. The power it holds in your day-to-day life often gets unnoticed.
Find yourself a men’s spray that you genuinely like and put it on after your shower. It does not matter whether it’s a daytime Perfume Spray or a night-time fragrance. If it makes you happy, put it on.
We’ve noticed that people tend to opt for fresh, aquatic perfume sprays when they need a bit of a pick-me-up, but you choose what you love best. There are no wrong options when it comes to which men’s spray you should use.
STEP 5: Call/Text Someone Who Cheers You Up
It can be your friend, your parent, your sibling, or even a colleague who knows how to make you laugh with their silly antics. The main idea here is to not let yourself be alone with thoughts that bring you down.
Speak to people, tell them how you’re feeling, get their opinions on it, and understand that these people are around you because they want to hear from you and spend time with you.
STEP 6: Get Yourself Something
Both receiving a gift and giving one can fill our brains with positive feelings. So, why not combine them and get the best of both worlds?
Treat yourself to a meal from that restaurant you really wanted to try.
Finally buy that trimmer that’s been added to your cart since last month.
Buy yourself a perfume spray that you’ve been eyeing since forever.
Whether it’s a new Men’s Spray or a shirt you’ve been secretly wishing for, getting something for yourself will always bring tiny bouts of joy that can help you have a slightly better day than you had anticipated in the morning.
STEP 7: Be Kind To Yourself
A day like this can feel frustrating and irritating.
You’ll probably find yourself a bit more scattered than usual and might even get angry at yourself because of that.
Just remember, everyone, including you, is allowed to have low days. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with them.
Being harsh on yourself on a day like this is not doing anyone any good.
You need to know that the only way through is by supporting yourself, not criticising yourself.
So, all we ask you to do is tell yourself constantly and throughout the day that it’s okay. This will pass. And you have not done anything wrong by feeling this way.
If it helps, send this to yourself as a message, set it as an hourly reminder, or say it in front of a mirror.
In Short…
There’s never an easy way to get through a day that feels heavy and burdensome. All we can hope for is that it passes soon and does not drain you completely.
If staying in is an option, then we suggest you take it to recharge.
If not, then we hope these steps help you get through the day a little more gently.
Take care and know that you’re not alone! You’ve got this!
